Chapter 2: David Barry
David Barry was born in Ireland, the son of a labourer, Robert Barry. Those able to remember his appearance remember his red hair and big beard. He left Ireland for Wales, and in December 1876 he was employed to work as a signalman for Great Western Railway at Newport Dock Street. Staying with GWR, in November 1879 he transfered to Aberbeeg working as a signalman until he resigned in 1902. It was in Aberbeeg that he met his future wife Margaret Davies. In 1882, they were married and together through the years they would raise 8 children: Ellen, Mary, Anne, Stephen, Margaret, Eva, Theresa and Winnifred.

St Illtyd Church and graveyard, Aberbeeg, Llanhilleth. David Barry and Miriam Sainsbury (nee Davies, ie David's sister-in-law) are buried here.
David's work records show his date of birth to be 26 May 1851, but other documentation suggests that he could have been born as early as 1845. David died in 1905 and is buried in the St Illtyd graveyard in Aberbeeg, Llanhilleth.
